When I first came across this article I immediately thought of Dan Pink’s Meaning and Empathy aptitudes from A Whole New Mind.
What an excellent example of offering meaning to young people and senior citizens. If you read through to the question-answer session, you can easily see how students were enhancing their empathy.
Plus – They even tied it into their curriculum. I have always thought that there were community resources that were underutilized, but I always struggled with connecting it directly to my classroom. These elementary teachers were able to take a seemingly unrelated topic, economics, and find a way to upgrade it to include meaning and empathy. An excellent idea!
