I ran into this great video about Micro-Lending and how high school students are becoming involved in the practice. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, it is based on the book Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty by Muhammad Yunus. Yunus is an economist and banker from Bangladesh who won the Nobel Prize in 2006. He created the Grameen Bank which basically uses the power of peer-pressure to ensure repayment on small loans without the requirement of collateral. (Wikipedia entry on Yumus and Grameen Bank)
The video is a short statement by a high school student who has organized her classmates to help with micro-lending. The students raise money and then pass it along to organizations who deal with micro-lending. What a great example of empathy, and an outstanding way to develop that aptitude. When Dan Pink discusses empathy in A Whole New Mind, he states that those who can relate to the needs of others will be successful in the 21st Century. Why not help your students by having them help others? It’s a great story, check it out!
